Liechtenstein - Cat Virus - Armin Öhri
I said this so many times on this blog, that the best thing about this project is the people I've met. And Liechtenstein is no expectation. I did my usual googling and trawling the web for science fiction authors from Liechtenstein but came away empty handed. But I did come across the Liechtenstein Literary society so I thought I'd drop them an email asking them about Science Fiction from Liechtenstein. I wasn't expecting much back as the population of the whole country is just over 40,000 people. Which is about twice the population of the small market town I live in. But I was surprised and absolutely amazed when the president of the society emailed back attaching a PDF of a short story he, himself, had written. He admitted it was more horror than Science Fiction, and sent me a copy in the original German and, far more usefully, a translated copy in English! It's only a super short piece of work, being 5 pages.
15th March 2026:
For this project I've collected novels rather than short stories, but sometimes I've broken this rule and chosen graphic novels like Anticuco from Peru and the more artistic books of Simon Stålenhag from Sweden. I doubt i'm going to get a full science fiction from such a small pool of people so for Liechtenstein my choice is going to be a short story sent to me as a PDF.
Usually I write a little about the cover art of the book. But there is no cover art. But the PDF did come with a little blurb about Armin Ohri and a low res image so i'm adding this to the blog. Its a nice stylised image, and because he kindly sent me a copy of his work, i'm going to put that he's a devilishly handsome man too!
The Story:
The story is really good fun, like I said earlier it's super short. And it's written in a very cool style with large time jumps and no explanations for the changes. It's a pretty dark story, especially the last sentence!, and yes it is more horror, but not very horror, and there is a good element at the beginning that points heavily towards science fiction. I would highly recommend the story, and hope Armin keeps on writing, and maybe one day writes a full science fiction novel!
